How Small Businesses Show Up on Google Maps (Free Setup Guide)

March 20255 min read

When someone searches 'plumber near me' or 'web designer in San Jose,' the businesses that show up in the map pack get the most clicks — and the most calls. Here's how to get your business in that spot.

Step 1: Claim Your Google Business Profile

Go to business.google.com and sign in with your Google account. Search for your business name. If it exists, claim it. If not, create a new listing.

Google will verify your business by mailing a postcard to your address (or via phone/email for some businesses). Once verified, your listing goes live.

Step 2: Fill Out Every Section Completely

Incomplete profiles rank lower. Google rewards businesses that take the time to fill everything in.

  • Business name (use your real name — no keyword stuffing)
  • Address or service area (for mobile businesses)
  • Phone number and website URL
  • Business hours (including holidays)
  • Primary category + additional categories
  • Business description (up to 750 characters)
  • Services list with descriptions
  • Products if applicable

Step 3: Add Photos

Businesses with photos get significantly more direction requests and website clicks than those without. Upload at least:

  • Your logo
  • Cover photo (your best image)
  • Interior and exterior photos
  • Team photos
  • Work samples or before/afters

Step 4: Get Your First Reviews

Reviews are one of the strongest ranking factors for Google Maps. Ask 5–10 happy customers to leave a review. Make it easy by sending them a direct link.

Never post fake reviews or offer incentives — Google can remove your listing entirely.

Tip: Reply to every review, positive or negative. Google considers engagement a trust signal.

Step 5: Post Weekly Updates

Google Business Profile has a 'Posts' feature — like a mini social media feed. Posting regularly (even once a week) signals to Google that your business is active.

Post about new services, limited-time offers, tips, or recent projects. Short posts with a photo work best.
