Local SEO is how your business shows up when someone nearby searches for what you offer. This checklist covers the most important steps — all free, none overly technical.
Google Business Profile (Do This First)
- 1Claim and verify your Google Business Profile at business.google.com
- 2Choose the most accurate primary category for your business
- 3Add 3–5 secondary categories
- 4Write a full 750-character business description using natural language
- 5Add all your services with descriptions
- 6Upload at least 10 photos (logo, team, work samples, location)
- 7Add your website URL and phone number
- 8Set up your service area if you're mobile/remote
Website On-Page SEO
- 1Add your city/region to your homepage title tag (e.g. 'Web Design in San Jose, CA')
- 2Include your city name naturally in the first paragraph of your homepage
- 3Add a footer with your full address or service area
- 4Make sure every page has a unique title and meta description
- 5Add an H1 heading to every page
- 6Include your phone number as a tap-to-call link on every page
- 7Create a dedicated Contact or Location page
- 8Embed a Google Map on your contact page if you have a physical location
Directory Listings
Getting listed in online directories helps your local SEO and builds trust. Start with:
- Yelp
- Bing Places for Business
- Apple Business Connect
- Google Business Profile (already covered above)
- BBB (Better Business Bureau)
- Chamber of Commerce (your local one)
- Clutch (for service businesses)
- UpCity
Keep your Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) consistent across all listings.
Reviews
- 1Ask your best clients to leave a Google review — send them a direct link
- 2Reply to every review (positive and negative)
- 3Aim for at least 10 reviews to start — more is better
- 4Don't fake reviews — Google's algorithm can detect them
Local Content
- Write blog posts targeting Bay Area-specific topics (e.g. 'Web design for San Francisco restaurants')
- Mention local neighborhoods, cities, or landmarks naturally in your content
- Create separate landing pages for different service areas if you serve multiple cities
Track Your Progress
- Set up Google Search Console (free) to monitor search impressions and clicks
- Check your Google Business Profile insights monthly
- Track your ranking for your top 3 target keywords (search your city + service in incognito mode)
